A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin
Amazing. Captivating. So well-written. Martin’s 1996 bestselling fantasy masterpiece weaves the origin stories of characters whose stories are impossible to ignore, and it will stand as an example for authors for decades to come.
I watched the first six seasons of the HBO show before I picked up the books, and while I knew everything that was going to happen in the first book beforehand, it allowed me to keep up with the characters much more easily (I’ve heard from several people that this is a big struggle for people who try to read the books first, understandably) and get a deeper understanding of their actions and motivations. On my first reading of this nearly 900-page tome, I struggled to get invested in the less significant storylines that Martin still devotes many pages to — thus the four-star rating.
Like Harry Potter, this is a series you really have to commit to, but it’s well worth the time.
