I adored The Goldfinch, and I started reading Tartt’s debut novel as soon as I’d finished it. But where The Goldfinch‘s Theo had some redeeming qualities and his narrative was one I couldn’t get enough of, I really struggled to stay interested in The Secret History.
Almost a year ago to the day, 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) student Madison Holleran jumped from a Philadelphia parking garage to her death. Yesterday, Holleran’s family released the suicide note she wrote.
For my entire life up until this point, summer break was it. It was the motivation for finishing school and working hard and pushing through exams. Three more weeks, one more week, two days, and finally, summer break. Three months that included trips to the beach, the lake and the river, new friends, summer loves and most importantly: freedom.
