Pullman’s characters are wonderful and memorable, and he paints the portrait of a world children have been eager to visit for over two decades. The Golden Compass offers both an enjoyable story and a valuable lesson for young readers about the value of curiosity, asking others for help, and being there for your friends when they need you. An exemplary fantasy read for kids and adults alike.
If you’re looking for a sci-fi/horror with a ton of plot, I would pick a different book/series. However, if you’re intrigued by great descriptions of a world where humans don’t know the rules and are trying desperately to figure them out while not being killed by the plant life/each other, I’d recommend Annihilation.
I’ve been on a serious Stephen King kick for the last few months, and Mr. Mercedes is one of my new favorites from the king of horror.
